ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in AIET was started in the academic year 2009 – 10 with an intake of 60 students. The department offers a full time B.E degree course in Civil Engineering. Apart from conducting academic programs, we intend to organize additional computer courses, seminars and workshops for the benefit of students as well as the faculty.

TECHNICAL TALKS

A lecture on “Cost Effective Technology for Buildings” was delivered by Dr. A.V. Pradeep Kumar, Professor & Head, Department of Civil Engineering, JNNCE, Shimoga, on Wednesday, 7th September 2011. In his talk, Dr. Pradeep Kumar emphasized on the various types of foundations and their adoptability in the real field. Also, useful information on some of the important ground improvement techniques, roofing techniques, pre–cast roofing units, and various materials used in the superstructures in actual practice, information regarding cost effective materials for doors and windows lintels and chejjas were dealt in his resourceful talk.

A Technical talk on “The Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering & the Basic Principles of Structural Dynamics” was delivered by Dr. D.L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Institute of Technology & Management, on 15th September 2011 wherein he stressed on topics such as Basic principles of vibrations and its causes, periodic & non-periodic motion, harmonic & non – harmonic motion, period & frequency, forced & free vibration, damping and equations of single degree of freedom system with & without damping.

Dr. Katta Venkataraman, Professor of Civil Engineering, NITKS, delivered his expert lecture on “Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering” on Wednesday, 28th September 2011. Dr. Venkataraman gave informative details on Epicenter; Plate Tectonics; Floating Plates; frequency of earthquake occurrence; Faults and Fault Motion; The Indian Plate Movements; Geographical Layouts and Tectonic Plate Boundaries in India; Tectonic map of India; Seismic Waves & its types; arrival of seismic waves at building site, etc.

Dr. Venkata Reddy, Professor of Geology, Department of Civil Engineering, NITKS, delivered his expert lecture on “Engineering Geology in Infrastructure, Country Planning & Development” on Wednesday, 28th September 2011. In his lecture, Dr. Reddy gave handful information about the Geological Aspects in Civil Engineering.

A Technical talk on “Recent Trends in Concrete Technology” was delivered by Dr. Narasimhan M.C., Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NITKS, on Thursday, 29th September 2011. His resourceful talk covered some of the important topics such as Rock Types Impact on Civil Engineering Projects; Hyper Spectral Remote Sensing; Structural discontinuities impact on Engineering Projects; Surface and Subsurface Folds in Foundation Engineering; Fluvial Dynamics in Civil-Water Resource Engineering etc.

A Technical talk on “Structural Engineering: State Of The Art” was delivered by Dr. K. S. Babu Narayan, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NITKS, on Wednesday, 5th October 2011. In his talk, Dr. Babu Narayan gave detailed information about Civil Engineering structures of wonder-its architectural and structural details; construction in new age different method of analysis etc.

A Technical talk on “Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering” was delivered by Er. Premanand Shenoy, Co-Founder of Roy and Shenoy Consultants, Mangalore on 16th February 2012. Er. Premanand Shenoy, in his address, highlighted the Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering. In his discussions the students learnt the basics of earthquakes, few historical cases of earthquakes, the fundamentals of earthquake engineering and finally they appreciated the applications of earthquakes in the design, construction and rehabilitation, in case of failure, of the structures with respect to earthquake standards. He also shared his work experience.

A Technical talk on “Municipal Water Supply” was delivered by Dr. A. Ganesh, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, on 1st March 2012. Dr. A. Ganesh, in his address highlighted the Municipal Water Supply and Environmental Engineering. In his discussions the students learnt the different stages of water treatment for the supply of domestic water. He also detailed about the system of water treatment units adopted in Udupi Municipality. He also shared his work experience. The students interacted with the expert in the questionnaire sessions and got benefitted. Thus, students appreciated the importance of water, its use, and conservation as civil engineers. The expert appreciated the conduction of such technical talks through the students’ forum and guided us to more practical exposure of the students.
ENGINEERS’ DAY
CIVIATION”–Civil engineering student forum organized the celebration of 151st Birth anniversary of “Bharat Ratna” Sir M. Visvesvaraya & Engineers day on Thursday, 15th September 2011. CIVIATION also celebrated its FIRST ANNIVERSARY on this memorable day. The annual report of CIVIATION & its activities during the academic year 2010–11 were placed before the audience by Ms. Shwetha Jain, V Semester B.E Civil Engineering student. Dr. D. L. Prabhakara, Director, Sahyadri Institute of Technology & Management arrived as the Chief Guest and addressed the gathering. In his speech, Dr. D L Prabhakara briefed the life history of Sir MV and highlighted the noble deeds of Sir M Visvesvaraya.
WORKSHOP & TRAINING PROGRAMMES

Civil engineering student forum organized a one day workshop on “Concrete as Construction Material” by Mr. Umesh Shetty, Deputy Manager – Customer Service, ACC Limited, Mangalore on Saturday, 12th March, 2011 as a part of its academics activities with an intention to make the students and staff members of the institute to gain knowledge regarding the practical aspects of cement–its manufacture, properties and its wide usage in the construction industry.

A seminar was conducted by Dr. Babu Narayan K, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, NITKS, Surathkal, on “Awareness about Civil Engineering” on Tuesday, 22nd March 2011 in view of celebration of ENGINEER’S WEEK between 19/03/2011 to 26/03/2011 by The Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Mangalore Centre in union with ACC Limited.
INDUSTRIAL VISIT
“CIVIATION” – Civil Engineering Student Forum organized an industrial visit to Master Plannery, Puttur on Saturday, 24th September, 2011. III Semester B.E Civil Engineering students, 69 in strength, were exposed to the manufacture and usage of various basic construction materials like concrete blocks, interlock tiles, door & window frames, precast culvert slabs, drainage pipes and pre fabricated housing units, etc. STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS

Fourth Semester B.E. Civil Engineering students secured the highest results, 89.23% in VTU examinations held during June/July 2011 amongst the colleges in Dakshina Kannada region.

Fifth Semester Civil Engineering students participated in NIRMAAN 2011 – National Level Technical Civil Symposium on 5th & 6th November 2011 organized by BMS College of Engineering, Bengaluru. The following are the achievements: Mr. Parag B.R. & Mr. Ramesh Rao B., have secured Second place in Routers (Surveying) and Mr. Anup Y. Naik, Mr. Harish Pradeer Naik, Mr. Pankaj Meghawani & Mr. Rohan Pednekar have secured Third place in Urban Planning.

V Semester Civil Engineering students participated in INTER COLLEGIATE INTER ZONE SPORTS COMPETITIONS 2011 – 12 at BVB College of Engineering & Technology, Hubli, on 19th & 20th September 2011and INTER COLLEGIATE ZONAL TOURNAMENTS 2011 – 12 at Vivekananda College of Engineering & Technology, Puttur, on 29th & 30th September 2011, organized by Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The following are the achievements: Mr. Bheemasagar N. & Mr. Subramanyam Raikar have secured Third place in Wrestling (96 Kg) and Mr. Bheemasagar N., Mr. Jnaneshwar K. G. & Mr. Subramanyam Raikar have secured Second Place in Kabaddi.

Ten students of V Semester Civil Engineering attended A WORKSHOP WITH DEMO TO HIGHLIGHT THE USE OF BAMBOO AS CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL, organized by The Bamboo Society of India in collaboration with Sahaydri College of Engineering & Management, Adyar, Mangalore, on 9th November 2011.
