ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

Electronics & Communication Engineering department has inaugurated its forum “EVIONICS” on 13th August 2011. The forum was inaugurated by Dr. Somashekhar Bhat, Professor, Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. On this occasion, Dr. Bhat spoke on “Let us test our Basics”. This talk focused on detailed study of PN-junction diodes, PNP and NPN transistors, FETs, MOSFETS, etc. He discussed about the various tricky circuits using basic electronic components.

Departmental infrastructure

Departmental Computer Centre: In addition to the central computer center, the department has its own dedicated computer labs which have more than 50 workstations having latest configurations to fulfill the needs of latest design and simulation softwares used in the field of Electronics.

Departmental Library: In addition to the central library, the department has its own library which has reference books, journals and old question papers for the reference of the students and staff members. We are also planning to keep a record and availability of previous project and training reports in this library for ready reference of the students.

Softwares: The department is well equipped with the softwares required for the design and simulation of electronic systems. These softwares include

  • PCB Designing Software - Orcad 9.1

  • MATLAB & SIMULINK

  • Virtual Simulation Software – PROTEUS 6.0.

  •  VLSI Design Tool Set – XILINX.

  • C Compiler and Simulation – KEIL Software for Microcontrollers

Departmental Laboratories

Printed Circuit Board Lab: The department has its own PCB lab in which students can design and fabricate PCBs as per the requirements of their projects. This lab is not specified in the university curricula but has been set up to enhance the practical knowledge of the students and to remove the barrier in project design and development.

Microprocessor & Microcontroller Lab: These two form the heart of any processing device as computer, mobile phones, PDA etc. The lab is intended to make the students learn the architecture, programming and interfacing of these devices. The lab lays down a strong foundation on which the students develop the projects. We have a XELTEK universal programmer to program the ICs.

Measurements & Instrumentation Lab: This lab helps to gain an understanding of measurement and instrumentation i.e. correct handling of significant figures and uncertainties while dealing with instrumentation systems. This lab has all the necessary equipments to cover the course contents of University.

Network & Electronic Devices Lab: The lab provides the foundation of electronics engineering. This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about various electronic devices. Students are made familiar with electronic circuits and their intended use in various applications.

Object Oriented Programming Lab: This is the era of programmable devices. To develop the programming skills of students, this lab has been established. In this lab students master programming techniques based on the object oriented approach.

Digital System Design Lab: The motive of this lab is to make students learn how to analyze and design digital circuits. A coordinated laboratory forms an integral part of this course to provide verification of the theoretical design and analysis of the digital circuits. Students are also made aware of the capabilities and limitations of simulation through the use of the PSpice simulator, Orcad and Proteus VSM 6.0.

Linear Control System Lab: The purpose of this lab is to provide an insight into the control applications. The lab is so designed as to make the students understand and visualize how the output of a system can be controlled by varying certain parameters. The lab is fully equipped to demonstrate various control principles such as how the speed of ac & dc motors can be controlled, how the angle of a shaft can be varied from a remote end, how the load current can be controlled by a small control current and still maintaining the isolation etc.

Communication Systems Lab: Today the electronic engineers are faced with tomorrow's problems. Communication lab is the leading and emerging subject to provide practical quality and reliable education to students which includes practicals related to digital communication, analog communication, fiber optics, telecommunications etc.

Microwave Engineering Lab: Communication nowadays is mainly wireless and through satellites. For this type of communication, microwaves are the only solution as these can penetrate the ionosphere. These waves being of very small wavelength require special devices to generate and amplify them. To show the students the amazing properties of the microwaves, this lab has been set up. The lab overviews different generators, their working and emphasizes on applications of microwaves.

Television Engineering Lab: The lab is designed to cover the course contents in which the principles of operation and services are emphasized. The experiments have been prepared to provide an insight into both monochrome and color TV systems. The testing and troubleshooting techniques are also included.

Power Electronics Lab: Power electronics is interdisciplinary in nature & is used in a variety of industries. To make students familiar with the various devices used in the industry, this lab is of great help. The lab provides opportunity to explore the characteristics of various devices and learn their use in sophisticated devices.

Digital Electronics Lab: This lab is intended to explore the properties of digital circuits, including noise margins, propagation delay times, and aspects of integrated circuit realization.

Applied Electronics Lab: In order to mould youth into world class technocrats of tomorrow, this lab provides the excellent practical knowledge to the students regarding the basics of electronics.

Project Lab: The idea behind this lab is to provide at a single place all that the students need for the development of a project This lab is equipped with all the software, hardware, testing & measuring equipment and literature required for the purpose which include high end work stations, mixed signal oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers. A universal programmer for programming microprocessors, microcontrollers, FPGAs, CPLDs is available in the lab to remove the barrier in project development
