Purpose and Philosophy of Water Day at AIET

Water is one of the planet’s most precious resources, and AIET, with its verdant campus in Moodbidri, is committed to nurturing this natural treasure. Water Day is organized to:

  • Educate future engineers on sustainable water management.

  • Encourage the adoption of water-saving technologies.

  • Engage the campus and local community in water conservation efforts.

Each year, activities are thoughtfully designed to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), reflecting the global significance of the initiative.

 Year-by-Year Report of Water Day Celebrations at AIET

Water Day 2020–21 — Valuing Water in Challenging Times

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020–21 Water Day at AIET focused on the theme “Valuing Water”, in line with the UN World Water Day theme. The event was conducted in a hybrid mode, blending online webinars with on-campus activities while adhering to safety protocols.

Highlights included:

  • A keynote address by an environmental scientist on “Water Security Post-Pandemic”.

  • A virtual poster competition, where students showcased innovative water conservation techniques.

  • A campus water audit, with small groups of students inspecting hostel and academic block water usage.

  • Planting of 300 saplings across the campus to promote groundwater recharge.

Year 2020-21

Water Day 2019–20 — Sustainable Solutions for Water Scarcity

This year focused on technical and community-level solutions to water scarcity. AIET students demonstrated:

  • DIY water filtration models using natural materials like sand and charcoal.

  • Rainwater harvesting system prototypes suitable for rural households.

  • Awareness skits performed in nearby villages in collaboration with local panchayats.

AIET also inaugurated a greywater recycling unit that now helps maintain the campus gardens.

Year 2019-20

 Water Day 2018–19 — Traditional Wisdom Meets Modern Engineering

In 2018–19, Water Day at AIET celebrated India’s age-old water management practices while integrating modern engineering ideas. Key initiatives:

  • Exhibitions on ancient Indian stepwells and tank systems.

  • Seminars on the importance of traditional knowledge in modern water conservation.

  • Demonstration of low-cost irrigation systems designed by civil engineering students.

The event inspired students to think beyond textbooks and look at indigenous solutions for water challenges.

Year 2018-19

Water Day 2017–18 — Youth Action for Water Preservation

The 2017–18 celebrations focused on empowering students to take ownership of water conservation:

  • Debates and essay competitions with the theme “Every Drop Counts.”

  • Launch of the ‘Save Water AIET’ pledge, signed by over 1200 students and staff.
