Introduction to NSS at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology
The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology (AIET) is a student-driven initiative that embodies the spirit of service, discipline, and social responsibility. Established with the motto “Not Me, But You”, NSS inspires students to contribute towards nation-building while fostering empathy, leadership, and community engagement.
At Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, NSS volunteers actively participate in outreach programs, awareness drives, environmental campaigns, rural development projects, and social welfare initiatives. These activities not only enhance students’ personal growth but also instill values of selfless service and teamwork.
Through NSS, students gain a unique platform to step outside their classrooms and apply their skills in real-life scenarios, making a tangible difference in society.
National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It was launched on 24th September, 1969, with the primary objective of developing the personality and character of the student youth through voluntary community service. It also provides opportunity to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The ideological orientation of the NSS is inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. The motto of NSS is “NOT ME BUT YOU”.
An NSS volunteer is required to undertake the following work/ activities to get NSS certificate:
Regular NSS Activity: Each NSS volunteer is required to put in minimum 120 hours of community service per year for two years, i.e., total 240 hours. This work is undertaken in villages adopted by NSS unit or School/ College campuses, usually after study hours or during weekends.
Special Camping Programme: NSS unit organizes a Special Camp of 7 days’ duration in adopted villages during vacations with some specific projects by involving the local communities. Each volunteer is required to participate in a Special Camp once during the 2-year period.
Types of Activities under NSS: The NSS volunteers work on issues of social relevance, which keep evolving in response to the needs of the community, through regular and special camping activities. Such issues include, inter alia, Literacy and Education, Health, Family welfare and Nutrition, Environment Conservation, Rescue and Relief during calamities and Empowerment of Women.

1. Swachh Bharath Abhiyan: On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, a cleaning activity was jointly organized by the NCC, NSS and YRC units of AIET on 2nd Oct. 2021, in association with the Gram Panchayth of Yedapadavu. On the national highway 169, from the hilltop down to the village Yedapadavu, a 4-kilometer stretch is covered during this cleaning action.
2. Blood donation Awareness campaign: A blood donation awareness campaign was launched online on 18th Nov. 2021 and 710 students from various institutions and departments situated in Shobhavana Campus have responded to the online awareness program.
3. Blood donation Camp: The blood donation camp was organized on 26th Nov. 2021. Alva’s Rotary Blood Bank, Wenlock District Hospital, Mangalore, and Indian Red Cross Society, Mangalore were invited to conduct this blood donation camp at AIET Campus and a total of 392 units of blood were collected.
4. Beach Clean: On 5th Dec. 2021, NSS volunteers along with the members of various other clubs actively participated in the Beach Cleaning activity at Hejmadi Kodi Beach in association with the Mantra Surf Club, Mulki. Solid litter, glass bottles, plastics were segregated.
5. Swachh Mijar: A cleaning activity in the locality was organized by the NSS unit and Swachh Mijar Club of AIET on 19th Dec. 2021.
6. March-past: NSS volunteers marched past along with various contingents on the occasion of 81st All India Inter-University Athletics Championship for men held on 7th Jan. 2022 at Swaraj Maidan, Moodbidri.
7. Volunteering in a job fair: NSS volunteers volunteered in the job fair held at Sacred Heart College, Madanthyar, on 20th and 21st January 2022.

This 70th Republic Day 2019 was a day of pride for Alva’s. Kumari Vijaylaxmi P Shivanagutti, a 6th Semester Mechanical Engineering Student, marched with the NSS contingent representing VTU – Belagavi, at the Republic Day parade at Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground in Bangalore.
