 Solid Waste Management

The solid waste management system at Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology is designed with precision and care. To promote segregation at the source, the campus is equipped with color-coded bins:

  • Green bins – for biodegradable waste

  • Blue bins – for non-biodegradable waste

  • Yellow bins – for e-waste collection

By placing these bins at strategic points across hostels, classrooms, laboratories, and outdoor spaces, the institute makes it easy for students and staff to responsibly dispose of waste. Regular monitoring and awareness campaigns further ensure that segregation practices are followed diligently.

The biodegradable waste collected is directed towards eco-friendly disposal methods, reducing the environmental footprint. Non-degradable waste is systematically managed to avoid pollution and promote recycling.

Liquid Waste Management

Managing liquid waste is a major responsibility for a large educational campus. At Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology, the liquid effluents generated from hostels, kitchens, and academic blocks are carefully treated before discharge.

The process includes:

  1. Sedimentation tanks – where heavy solids settle at the bottom.

  2. Chemical treatment tanks – where harmful pollutants are neutralized.

  3. Re-use system – where treated water is reused for gardening and agricultural purposes inside the campus.

This scientific approach to wastewater recycling not only ensures compliance with environmental norms but also conserves fresh water for essential uses.

 E-Waste Management

With rapid technological upgrades, electronic waste is a growing concern across educational institutions. Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology has implemented a structured e-waste management policy to minimize the negative impact of discarded electronics.

  • Electronic items like computers, printers, and lab equipment are put to optimum use.

  • Minor repairs and refurbishments are done in-house by technical assistants and reused for student projects.

  • Non-repairable e-waste is collected and disposed of responsibly through tie-ups with Cerebra Integrated Technologies Ltd, Bangalore and Sogo Synergy Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore.

This MoU-based partnership ensures that the e-waste is processed safely and recycled, reducing the burden on landfills.

 Waste Recycling System

Recycling is an integral part of the campus waste management system. The institute ensures that paper waste does not go to waste but is recycled and repurposed.

  • At the end of every semester, paper waste such as unused notebook pages and Internal Assessment test papers are collected.

  • These are handed over to M/s Diya Impression, Gardadi, Belthangady, a local recycling partner.

  • The paper is transformed into re-bound books (A4 and long-size formats).

  • These recycled books are supplied back to the campus stationery and sold at concession prices to students.

Through this system, the institute not only practices sustainability but also supports affordability and local entrepreneurship.
